Salar de Uyuni

After yet another long bus journey we arrived in Uyuni in the far south west of Bolivia in a sandstorm, which compounded the effect of it appearing like a frontier town. The strong winds also resulted in a powercut which lasted over 24 hours. And we also discovered that the Bolivia: Chile border was shut due to snow and, as our booked three day trip to end up in Chile was clearly not going to be possible, the agents we had booked with had just shut up shop and gone home!

The next morning we managed to book an alternative 2 day trip returning to Uyuni and set off in a 4WD over the spectacular white salt flats, pausing to take the usual silly pictures. Overnight was spent in a salt hotel. The walls, tables and even beds were made of salt. And yes, it was freezing!

Coldest night of my life by far!

On the second day we saw even more vast and incredible scenery and wildlife!
