Early the next morning we, together with Gill, Ralph, Jeanette and Ian, were being serenaded by a local band in the waiting room prior to boarding the Andean Explorer for the 10 hour journey in style to Lake Titicaca!
The train had a viewing car at the back which afforded great views as it climbed to 4319 metres for a brief stop in La Raya before descending to Puno.

At Lake Titicaca we awoke at 5 am to watch the sunrise and were surprised to see the waves lapping gently a few feet under our window! We spent the day first canoeing and then cycling through the local fields before enjoying sundowners by the lake shore. A local family become exasperated with their obdurate mule and provided additional entertainment!
The following day we visited the local ‘floating islands’, literally so as they are man-made from hand cut reeds. The main income for the approximately 600 inhabitants these days is from the tourist trade.
